Injectable Vitamin C: Effective Treatment for Viral and Other Diseases

In August 2006, we sent many copies of the book to U.S. health officials. We received the following response/book review letter from Secretary Leavitt's office. Our response to his letter is here.

A front page article in the New York Times September 22, 2005, notes the following:

1) Recently published analysis (The Lancet on line) of 37 years of data on flu vaccine effectiveness showed, at best “a modest ability to prevent influenza or its complications in elderly people. The runaway 100 percent effectiveness that’s touted by proponents [of flu vaccines] was nowhere to be seen,” said Dr. Tom Jefferson, a member of an international consortium of scientists “who perform systematic reviews of research data.” “There is a wild overestimation of the impact of these vaccines in the community,” Jefferson said.

2)  Dr. Jefferson is quoted in the article as saying, “What you see is that marketing rules the response to influenza, and scientific evidence comes fourth or fifth. . . . Vaccines may have a role, but they appear to have a modest effect.”

3)  Even if a vaccine for pandemic bird flu were to be ready, Dr. Jefferson said, “we are unsure from the data whether these vaccines would work on the elderly.”

4)  Another paper published by The Lancet on line, discussed in the same New York Times article, reports that the influenza viruses, “particularly those from the dreaded bird flu strain,” have developed high rates of resistance to cheap antiviral drugs, with resistance increasing rapidly since 2003, especially in Asia. Researchers were alarmed by this finding. Tamaflu, “the most popular newer more expensive antiviral medicine,” will never be available to most pandemic flu victims, even if it does prove to be effective, which is by no means a given.

5)  The mutation(s) in the deadly bird flu virus that would make a human flu pandemic possible have apparently still not occurred, but it may only be a matter of time.  We hope with all our hearts these mutations will not occur, but we must be prepared.

Again, the best possibility for surviving infection with deadly pandemic flu virus—or any flu virus, for that matter—lies, we think, in injectable vitamin C.  Doctors’ past experience supports this idea.
